LOW SLOPE SYSTEMS
Felt, bitumen and surfacing are the three elements that compose a built-up roof. The felts act as tensile reinforcement to resist the extreme pulling forces in roofing material and are usually made up of glass and organic or polyester fibers. When layered, felts allow more bitumen to be applied to the roofing system. Bitumen is the glue that holds the felts together and is also the waterproofing material in the system. The surfacing is the cap sheet to protect the membrane from mechanical damage. When applied to built-up roofs, they are usually smooth, gravel, slag or a mineral-coated. Sometimes a mineral coated surfacing is applied on top of the felt.
Developed in Europe during the sixties and introduced to the U.S. in the early seventies, modified bitumen roofing is very similar to a built-up roof. The addition of plastic or rubber-based polymeric binders to asphalt improves the performance of the roof. Modified bitumen is used in multiple layers and reinforced with a woven glass or polyester fabric reinforcing to increase the membranes’ resistance to heavy traffic, punctures and tears.
EPDM Single-Ply EPDM
Also referred to as rubber roofing, this thermo set membrane is compounded from rubber-polymer. EPDM single-ply roofing is popular for it’s resistance to temperature extremes, sunlight, ozone and moisture. The installation is also easy, fast and clean. This lightweight material can be applied to virtually any roof surface, whether is be flat, spherical, curved or slanted. Varied application techniques such as ballasted, fully adhered and mechanically fastened give EPDM single-ply roofs adaptability.
Thermoplastics PVC/TPO Single Ply
The fastest growing segment of the U.S. roofing market over the past five years is Thermoplastic single ply membranes and they are revolutionizing the industrial and commercial roofing industry. The PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a reinforced membrane with tough solvent-or hot-air welded seams giving it excellent durability and dimensional stability. The TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin) combines the hot-air welding benefit of the PVC and the greater flexibility and weather protection benefits of EPDM. Both are aesthetically pleasing, lightweight, highly reflective and tear resistant, and offer great fire resistance.
STEEP SLOPE SYSTEMS
Fiberglass shingles usually offer greater durability, depending on their manufacturer, and consist of a fiberglass mat, top and bottom layers of asphalt and mineral granules. Fiberglass-reinforced products dominate the market, because they are more fire resent. Fire resistance of most roofing materials is sorted by Class A, B or C; A being the more fire resistant. Whereas fiberglass shingles have a Class A rating, most organic shingles have a Class C rating. Both are available in architectural grades that offer a texture appearance, so the shingle’s reinforcement has little effect on its appearance.
Laminated dimensional shingles
Laminated dimensional shingles are also available for higher-budget applications. They are thicker due to a lamination of more than one thickness of product and also contain shadow lines, resembling a wood shake or slate shingle.
